ABOUT THE GAME

You are a recently hired royal cook in the king's household charged with catering the king's guests. However, the future of the kingdom is at peril. Years of neglecting food waste has polluted the nearby river, which the kingdom is depending on for its drinking water. Can you persuade the king to save the river and thus the entire kingdom?

The kingdom's royal custom dictates the food to be thrown to guests via the use of special sling. Prevent food waste from piling up by throwing the food to the guests. Don't let the food drop to the ground or you will risk increasing the river's pollution levels. Not all is lost if that happens however, because you have the ability to utilize some of the food waste for the benefit of the river. Be efficient at your job and remember to utilize the waste wisely so the river can be saved!

BACKGROUND

King's Feast was created as a part of the first year studies in Business Information Systems at Tampere University of Applied Sciences. This game is made as a part of the Opi Ravinteista! (ORAS) -project, in cooperation with the Kädet Multaan -project, financed by the Finnish Ministry of the Environment. The main theme of this game project is the circulation of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), and more specifically, the topic this game touches is food consumption and food waste. Primary goal of this game is to promote awareness in the importance of reduction and proper utilization of food waste.

The nutrients essential for agriculture are being used unsustainably across the globe, and global reserves of mineral nutrients are dwindling. The knowledge and understanding about nutrient recycling needs to be renewed through extensive and efficient distribution of information. The goal is to promote improvement of quality of water as well as to raise awareness and acceptability of nutrient recycling by using educational and communicative means.
